Roy Best
Roy Best is a visual artist from Manchester who graduated in Fine Art at Newcastle in the 1970’s before briefly teaching art and working as a freelance illustrator in Leeds and London. Circumstances led to him having to completely abandon art and he only resumed his creative journey as recently as 2022 after a 40 year hiatus. That’s why his Instagram handle is @back.to.the.drawingboard.
Roy now divides his time between Manchester and Leeds where he is busily developing his art practice. Over the last couple of years he has been exhibiting his work widely – including three solo shows – picking up a number of art prizes along the way.
His work is mostly figurative and is firmly rooted in drawing. He has developed a highly distinctive densely drawn mark-making style which may be influenced by his past experience as an intaglio printmaker. Much of his recent artwork has been collected in a series of large format limited edition art books.
Alongside his more accessible figurative work, Roy is also developing a strand of abstract and conceptual artwork exploring written language.
