Roy Best
Roy Best is a visual artist from Manchester who graduated in Fine Art at Newcastle in the 1970’s before briefly teaching art and working as a freelance illustrator in Leeds and London. Circumstances led to him having to completely abandon the creative life and he has only recently resumed his art practice after a 40 year hiatus.
Roy is now splitting his time between Manchester and Leeds and is busily refreshing long dormant skills and working to rediscover his artistic voice. Intensive life drawing practice and urban sketching have been key elements of this over recent months. His work is mostly figurative and firmly rooted in drawing. His themes include explorations of the human form and aspects of the urban landscape combined with an imaginative approach to finding the extraordinary in the mundane.
He is also involved in collaborative projects with other creatives and in recent months has begun to exhibit his work widely, including taking part in shows in Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, London, Sheffield, Ilkley, Halifax and Hull.
He won first prize in the 2023 ‘Win It! Art awards in Leeds and was also a winner in the Leeds Civic Trust’ ‘Pride in Place’ awards through which his work will be featured in the 2024 Leeds Calendar.
He is an associate member of Aire Place Studios.
