Title: West Pier Lighthouse, Whitby (Blueprint)
These Blueprints of the West and East Pier Lighthouses have been created for illustration and aesthetic purposes only. They are intended to show how architectural blueprints of these structures may have looked if they had been created. As far as I am aware, the original engineering plans have probably been lost many years ago and may have been much more basic than I have illustrated here. In fact, when the West Pier Lighthouse was built in 1831 the original lantern section was different and replaced with what you see in the artwork and it would take another eleven years for the printing process of blueprints to be invented by Sir John Herschel.
To produce these illustrations I undertook a great deal of research into lighthouses. Along the way I was helped by an expert I became acquainted with during those studies that kindly shared his knowledge on this subject.
All the lettering and artwork are hand rendered using various technical pens filled with a mixture of white and blue inks on A2 size blue card to achieve a look of authenticity.
I added an element of graphic design to the layout and they have been composed in such a way as to look beautiful either side by side or facing each other on opposite walls either in the home or office.
