Title: Ode to Cosmos

Cosmos are usually pink but last year a purple cosmos self-sowed in my garden. When creating this piece I wanted to capture its somewhat simplistic beauty whilst reminding us of the complex botanical structures we often don’t see. I have used more than 1,500 individual flowers to create this artwork: Purple statice and white broom bloom have been used in the petals (or florets) to give a frilly effect with the colour fading towards the top of the petals whilst near the centre the purple is brighter and more vibrant. The broom bloom stems have been woven into the fabric to resemble a complex web of hidden capillaries and the central structure is formed of Rodanthe heads and bleached baby’s breath.
