‘funky monkey tunes’ feels like one of those phrases that bubbles up from the same cultural soup as 70s design itself: playful, a little surreal, rhythm-first in my head it just appeared, twirled around and sat deep in my memory bank.
it actually fits beautifully with the italian 60s–70s design mindset that i have been exploring on and off this past year – looking at old, almost mischievous patterning, op-art waves, biomorphic shapes with arm, funky colour palettes — burnt orange, avocado, tobacco brown, mustard, acid green all not to be taken too seriously
‘funky monkey tunes’ doesn’t need a fixed origin. a lot of 70s aesthetics were about collective memory rather than authorship — things you half-remember from album sleeves, tv idents, record shops, or kitchens with patterned walls – we had some serious wallpapering vibes when i was growing up.
currently we are working on our house, some of this style will inevitably make its way into the lounge! a space that doesn’t just look good — it grooves.
