Title: Fort Perch Rock

Built in New Brighton in the early 1800s to protect the port of Liverpool a local story states that it only fired one shot in anger. This was at a sailing ship making its way to Liverpool at the beginning of World War 1. This shot across its bows went astray and landed in Hightown, a village on the opposite side of the mersey. No one was hurt and the villagers have placed the shot in a glass case in the village hall. It has a the inscription saying ‘A present from New Brighton’. I personally know it as a good place to fish for cod and whiting from the shore while watching the mersey traffic.
