Mary Waterfall

I am a seascape and landscape pastel artist based in North Yorkshire. I use dry pastels or pastels over ink or alcohol wash on textured paper. Nothing else seems to give me the glow and depth of colour I want in my paintings, or the ability to create instant movement, direction, and flares of light and shadow.

My Passion is the sea and the ragged, wild moors. I love the big skies of the dales and the east coast, (any sea really), hypnotic waves, ripples on water, shifting light cascading from sun or moon, and the ever-changing twist and curl, of clouds. I spend a lot of my life walking or painting (often both at the same time), on the moors, at the top of a mountain, or by water.

Spending time in wildness and isolation, tracking the moon as she shifts through her phases, the seasons as they renew, blossom, withdraw and hide, gives me the space to feel, and reflect. When I paint, I try to capture this meditative feeling, the brief fleeting moments of movement and beauty that lift the heart, and bring peace and tranquillity.

Crafts in the Pen

Quick Description

Ironically it was the hottest day of the year when I did Art in the Pen, and last weekend was the coldest so far. A st...more
