Katrine Barber

I’m influenced by the simple idea of creating beautiful objects which complement and enhance their surroundings.

In the frantic world we live in today, I want a sense of peace to envelope the viewer when they look at my vessels and I spend hours hand building, shaping, burnishing and texturizing my pots, ensuring each line flows into the next.

The way the light plays across the surfaces is important, the interior shapes being as important as the exteriors. I use a heavily grogged raku clay which emphasises the texture, the lines following the shapes of the vessels.

Thinking about the environment, each piece is fired only once and they are then cold finished with colour, mixed to complement the shapes. I feel that not using glazes minimises the use of chemicals and retains the tactile nature of that simple material, clay, without the layer of glass that glazes add. I encourage the viewers to touch and hold them, I like my pots to be stroked!

Katrine Barber works from her studio in rural North Lincolnshire, you can view her work at regular exhibitions, at art fairs and by appointment. Examples of her collections can be viewed here, however Katrine also welcomes you to get in touch to discuss her work.

The Art
Katrine produces hand built ceramics using Raku clay. Katrine currently has two main collections Fire & Earth and Sea & Sky, each with their own distinct identity. You can find more about both of these collections on their gallery page but ultimately they are united with their strong sense of shape, light and texture.

The Artist
Katrine made her first pot aged six years old, however it was six decades later that her love for ceramics has evolved into the dramatic pieces she now exhibits throughout the UK. Completing a BA(Hons) Fine Art & Craft degree at Doncaster College she specialised in ceramics and her days are now spent in her studio under the watchful eye of her dog Ruby.
