Title: Three Swallows
The original inspiration for this was actually a poem by Ted Hughes called “The Swifts”. It has the wonderful line
“They’ve made it again,
Which means the globe’s still working”
Swifts, however, are somewhat boring in their colouring and I have fewer Swifts around our house than we do Swallows.
The heads are made by building up blocks of Padauk or Mahogany with Black Walnut to enable the shape to be carved with some of the distinctive markings of Swallows head. The wings are laminated Black Walnut with Sycamore. The angle of the grain is set to reflect the direction of the feathers. The birds move and flap freely.
