Title: Flight of Geese
The inspiration for this piece was a show by Karine Polwart called “A pocket of Wind Resistance” about the importance of the way in which a goose flock formation works. The lead goose provides a “pocket of ease and comfort” for those behind but the flock only works if other geese are able to take over the lead.
The geese are constructed using laminated Smoked Oak and Ash veneers. The geese are suspended from limed oak beams which allow them to move in relation to each other as well as up and down. An element of user interaction is possible, enabling the flock to “fly” where air currents aren’t producing enough movement.
The feathers are constructed using book-matched Ash and Smoked Oak veneers to ensure the effect of feathers. Each feather is constructed and laminated separately, then assembled on to the curved Ash spine of the wing.
