Title: Conference of Birds
There’s a Persian story that the birds, led by the Hoopoe, sought a ruler – the Simurgh (wisest of birds). Led by the Hoopoe they go on a long, allegorical journey. At the end they cross a mountain and fly over a lake; looking down they realise that they, collectively, have become the Simurgh. In my piece individual birds are suspended below a shape made up of bird silhouettes or shadows.
The “free” birds are made up of laminated veneers of timbers including Sycamore, Tineo and Black Walnut. The shadow bird above is made of Koto. The head is a solid piece of Yew. The “free” birds move and flap as well as moving collectively through with the shadow bird at the top.
