Nicola Rawnsley

I intend to explore the intersection of man-made mechanical time and rhythms of nature. I want to focus particularly on the disruptions that arise when these temporal orders clash. My artwork will capture the point when nature makes headway and asserts its precedence over human intentions.

I aim to photograph and use an abandoned  building, such as a high rise or a post industrial site, as a metaphor for man-made time. They also provide commentary on humanity’s environmental exploitation and urbanisation, which has disrupted natural cycles through the removal of trees. I will use Oak veneer, symbolically, to represent nature’s timescales.

I will then paint upon it the decay and erosion, such as sagging walls and rusty metal, to highlight the relentless effects of time. The artwork will have a composition that embraces ambiguity in both line and shape. It will challenge the viewer to decide whether what they see is man-made or natural, as the forms exist in a blurred void between precision and fluidity. My hope is that this experience prompts viewers to reflect on their own place in time.

I want my artwork to be a reminder that we are a part of nature’s time and not separate from it. It is important to be reminded that we are moving further away from nature and our own natural rhythms. By moving through time in a linear and quantified manner we are misaligning our natural selves and causing mental health issues.  Human bodies and minds thrive when aligned with the cycles of day and night, seasons, and the tides, sustaining ecosystems and life itself.
