I’ve always been obsessed with textiles, any textiles. My first memory is of making clothes for my toys in my bed. I managed to sew myself and pyjamas to my first doll’s dress. Throughout school I studied Art. We didn’t have textiles lessons when I was at school. I went to Art College and then did a Degree in Theatre Studies. My second passion had begun. I never wanted to perform. I was much more interested in creating everything else. The scenery, lighting and costumes.
I have since worked as a Stage Technician, Props Maker and Scenery Painter for the Grand Opera House, Belfast, Opera North and the West Yorkshire Playhouse. I am happiest when I am making.
My next career change called and I re-trained to be a teacher of Art, Textiles and Design & Technology. I dearly loved that job and have taught in several schools in West and North Yorkshire for 24 years.
Eighteen months ago, I took the huge leap to leave teaching and start my own Art / Craft business.
Whilst teaching, I struggled with felting. A thoughtful present from my husband was a short felting course. From then, I was hooked. Finally I could paint using fibres. I wasn’t a confident painter but working with fibres is like pastel work and I was able to create work I liked.
I was born at the foot of the beautiful Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland. Surrounded by the sea, forests, many myths and legends, I have always been drawn to a mythical take on life and this is reflected in my work. I am fascinated with the beauty in the smallest hedgerow life, dramatic mountains or moors. My paintings and accessories are inspired by nature in all it’s glory.
I am building up a range of services that my business will offer. I’ve realised, I haven’t really left teaching and am currently offering about 8 / 10 workshops per year. I love meeting people and so, have attended many fairs, exhibitions and festivals during this past year. I plan to continue offering workshops and going to as many events as possible because I actually love a great day out in a village hall, field, tent… you name it.
