Hello. In the flatlands of Holderness, East Yorkshire, the landscape is agricultural and intensively farmed. It is this low-lying land, crosscut with drainage channels that is the subject of most of my work. My paintings are not naturalistically representative of the area, rather, they connect with and communicate my experience of being in the flat and expansive landscape I have known since childhood. My paintings all come from sketches made in the field and are made by applying, removing and disrupting many layers of colour, marks and materials—an archaeological process that echoes the changing ecology of the land itself; the changing light and weather, the changing seasons and crops, and the changes over the generations as the land was drained and reclaimed from the river and marshes. I’m a native of Hull, lived away for many years, returning to home soil on retirement. I am currently based at Calf House Studios in Bishop Burton.

I exhibit frequently in open exhibitions and have had solo exhibitions at Ropewalk, Barton-on-Humber: Eleven, Hull: Morten Gallery, Bridlington.
