Jennifer Cottis

I am a visual artist and designer whose work builds on a strong foundation in drawing skills. A personal visual language that frequently moves back and forth between 2 and 3 dimensions – each exploration informing and feeding back into the other – drawings translated into sculptures – sculptures into a further development of drawing and painting.

I was educated at Ealing School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design in London and as a student was twice winner of the RSA travelling bursaries award for design. Examples of Designs have been included in major exhibitions at the prestigious Design Centre Stuttgart and the International Design Centre Berlin.

My paintings and sculptures have been exhibited widely in public and private galleries across the Country to great acclaim and been featured in several journals. They have won several prizes, and are in private collections in England and the USA.

An art and design education at Ealing School of Art and The Central School of Art and Design in London led to a successful career as a Staff Designer, Design Consultant and Educator as Senior Lecturer in University Art and Design Departments including Goldsmiths College, University of London, Director of Studies at The Central School of Art and Design and Academic Development Manager at Lincolnshire College of Art and Design. She has written validated curriculum documents, distance learning material, a course book ‘Product Modelling’ (published by OUP), as well as a research thesis examining the cognitive processes involved in design problem solving.

Awards for her Designs have included two Royal Society of Arts Design Bursaries, and examples of her Designs, and biography of career, have been included in major exhibitions at the prestigious Design Centre Stuttgart, Germany, and the International Design Centre Berlin.

Having had a respected career as a designer and educator she now concentrates full time on producing a body of art that has been exhibited in public and private galleries around the Country to wide acclaim.

Exhibitions have included a successful solo exhibition of recent landscape paintings and sculptures in the Embassy Theatre Gallery.

A personal exhibition, ‘Movement through Space and time’, of work from the human form series at the Room 52 Gallery, Boston, and ‘Inspired by Water’ a group exhibition at the Shire Hall Gallery, Stafford, including several pieces of work from the seascape series.

As a finalist and ‘top 40 artist’ in the recent Culture Cloud exhibition at the New Art Exchange, Nottingham, the quality and originality of her art has been recognised. She has also won prizes in several open exhibitions including the Portrait Prize in the Carre Gallery Portrait exhibition.

Her work builds on a sound foundation in drawing skills, and paintings, drawings and sculptures fall into the main thematic drives of human form, seascapes and landscapes.
