Elissa Harte

During the week I work in architecture and planning. As a result I spend a considerable amount of my time engrossed in the built environment, working quite precisely with computers and tiny fine liners. My paintings reflect my weekend escape to nature, an excuse to get out and take the photo’s I make paintings from. I paint animals and wildlife almost exclusively, because I love the idea that when you encounter something wild that moment is something no one else has or will ever experience. The photo’s I take aid a memory, and I’m practicing translating the feeling of that onto canvas, admittedly with mixed success.

My work tends to be big – wooden boards worked up with acrylic. The size of the work is unfortunately at odds with the size of my flat and I’m slowly being buried, but working large allows me to examine details and work on ways of representing light and texture.

I’ve lived in Yorkshire most of my life and have recently returned home after a five year stint in Bristol.
