Brian Holland
I make vessels and sculpture. Most are wood fired in an anagama type kiln to around 1300 Degrees Centigrade, but others are fired in neutral, (electric Kiln) atmosphere or in a gas kiln. Occasionally I also raku fire a piece.
My work has been influenced by observations of people, by places I have visited , by ancient artefacts, by sea and rocks, and city spaces. I am drawn to neo-lithic vessels whilst loving the sculpture of Rodin, Barlach and Kollwitz.
Most of my work is either coiled, slabbed, or modeled, but recently I have been given to just pulling the clay about as I reclaim it and stopping when something- a place, a surface, a space, a memory is invoked. This image is then simply hollowed out for firing purposes and covered in glazes or oxides.
