Kathe Kollwitz is renowned for her work usual charcoal. The work of Kathe Kollwitz presents a harrowing and sorrowful atmosphere with her monochromatic range and lack of expression. She is very focal towards the shadows on her pieces and how it engulfs any figure portrayed. ​

Here, I used charcoal and an eraser to render a figure. I am specifically drawn to the detail in the hands, in which I used an eraser to mark the details. ​

I’m also impressed with the composition of the piece, being very vertical and how the page cuts off the arm it gives the impression of imperfectness and that there’s a continuation to the image.
