Ella Cairns

My practice explores the relationship between nature, motherhood, grief and the ever-changing landscapes we carry within ourselves.

Working primarily in acrylic, I create expressive landscapes inspired by my childhood and adulthood spent immersed in Yorkshire’s rolling countryside and coastal bolt holes, where shifting light, wildflowers, tides and seasons have helped to ease, heal and become metaphors for the cycles of human experience.

My paintings are rooted in the belief that nature mirrors our own lives. Growth, loss, joy, grief, uncertainty and renewal exist alongside one another, just as they do within the landscape. Motherhood and loss has deepened this understanding, revealing both the fragility and resilience that emerge through constant change. Rather than resisting these transitions, my work embraces them as an essential part of being human.

Painting has become both a conversation with the landscape and a way of navigating my own inner world. Living with anxiety, depression and neurodivergence, I have found the act of making to be both grounding and restorative. Through expressive mark-making, layered colour and an intuitive process, I seek to capture atmosphere and feeling rather than precise representation revealing a world that feels familiar and yet alien or abstract at times.

Ultimately, my work invites viewers to pause, breathe, question and reconnect with the natural world and with themselves. It is an exploration of belonging, not through fitting into expectations, but through recognising that, like the seasons, we are constantly evolving. We are allowed to change, to rest, to bloom, to grieve, to heal, and simply to be, without needing to belong to anything or indeed anyone.
