Elizabeth de Broise

My practice is inspired by a fascination with the human/dog relationship and fuelled by a lifelong love of drawing. My work is meticulous and detailed, informed by a long standing admiration for realism and figurative art and the satisfaction of recreating subjects on paper. I aim to capture images from life, true to life, and work mostly with colour pencil to achieve this. I believe the process of creating is as important as the final outcome, and often set myself challenges to test different methods. I usually render pieces in small sections, enabling me to give equal attention to every detail before viewing it as part of the whole.

My portfolio largely consists of over 200 pet portrait commissions, alongside project work driven by a desire to celebrate the many ways in which dogs help, protect and enrich people’s lives. I am particularly intrigued by the unique nature of our relationship with dogs and how we have utilised their capacity for learning to fulfil various roles in society. My work has recently shifted from formal portraits to more detailed scenes, incorporating a narrative element and portraying interactions between owner and pet, an unspoken connection that I feel lends itself to representation through visual art.

Originally from Sheffield, I am now based in Leeds where I work from my home around my two children and my part time job. I have exhibited my work in group exhibitions and taken part in art trails for a number of years. I am a member of the UK Coloured Pencil Society and a graduate of Wimbledon College of Art, where I studied Design for Performance.
