Steve Murray
We live in a world of increasing complexity and challenges; uncertainty is a constant. Our digital presence requires a physical, human response; a premium of brain, heart and gut. My work, originating from within the Pennine moorlands in the north-west of England, seeks to understand how we can survive and move towards our futures, as the generations before us have done. My materials include acrylic, oil pastels, textiles and found items on canvas.
The moorland landscape is characterised by ancient habitation, pathways and the evolution of human and natural features, which allows for reflection on legacy and change, boundaries and the breaking of them, and have featured in my awareness since i was very young.
As this process of a lifetime continues to develop, i’m increasingly drawn towards abstraction, opening up to new influences, new landscapes and how the natural world, human nature and civilisation contact, co-exist and clash.
Connection to Yorkshire
I live in Rochdale, just on t' other side of th' hill (Pennines), though the majority of exhibitions i've taken part in have been in Yorkshire.
