Flasby is a small hamlet in the Yorkshire Dales forming part of the Flasby Hall Estate. Flasby Hall was built in the mid-eighteenth century and extended and remodelled in the mid-nineteenth century by George Webster of Kendal, for the Preston family. The kitchen gardens were situated in the middle of the village with a footpath leading about a mile from the hall to the gardens. The footpath is long gone but a pair of wrought iron gates remain where the path once crossed the road into the village.
In this painting, we see one of the two gates, leading from the field, onto the road. Beyond and out of view is the second gate leading into the woods where the kitchen garden was located. The dry-stone wall and gate posts are in full sunlight whilst the road and woods beyond are in deep shadow. The footpath is long gone and the gate is overgrown with nettles and weeds where nature is reclaiming this peaceful place.
