Richard Kitchen & Navigators Art Collective

I’m a London-born artist and writer. I taught literature and drama in East Anglia and Spain before settling in York in 2008. I was awarded an MA in Fine Art by St John’s University in 2020. I then joined a working studio and gallery in York, instituting community outreach and a mentoring scheme for young artists. I’m also a freelance editor and an interest in text informs much of my work.

My practice is fuelled by my own drawings, paintings, photography and poetry, and influenced by the impact of time, nature and people on the environment. Drawings respond to surfaces and their underlying images and stories, and these feed further work. Collages recycle and repurpose, championing the unloved and the discarded as a metaphor for remedy. Texts are transformed into visual art by creative analytical processes such as word mapping.

I’m a co-founder of Navigators Art, a fluid collective of cross-disciplinary creatives who devise theme-based exhibitions and events in and around York. Having grown from 3 to 12+ members since March 2022, we currently comprise visual artists of all kinds, writers and spoken word artists, a composer and other musicians and performers.

Please contact me for enquiries, commissions and workshop opportunities.
